SmartLab

The SmartLab at the University of Genoa (Università degli Studi di Genova) was established in 2001 as an interdisciplinary research facility dedicated to promoting cutting-edge research and innovation in the integration of intelligent systems and smart technologies to enhance various aspects of society, from healthcare to engineering.

In its early years, the lab concentrated on developing smart environments, with a particular focus on assistive technologies through the use of sensors and automation. Over time, SmartLab expanded its research domains to include Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies and methodologies. This expansion allowed the lab to establish significant collaborations with industry, especially in the fields of industrial, naval and transportation engineering.

At the core of SmartLab’s mission is the pursuit of fundamental research in AI, ML, and Statistical Learning Theory. This involves developing new algorithms, models, and theoretical frameworks to advance our understanding of how machines can learn from data and make, or support people in making, safe and intelligent decisions.

Researchers at SmartLab explore various aspects of AI and ML, investigating innovative approaches to data analysis and predictive modeling. By pushing the boundaries of statistical learning theory, they aim to uncover the mathematical principles that underpin machine learning, leading to more predictable, efficient, and trustworthy algorithms.

This last topic has become of paramount importance in recent years, as AI systems increasingly influence various aspects of society, therefore SmartLab’s basic research has also been focused on creating systems that exhibit fairness, robustness, privacy, and explainability. This foundational research not only contributes to the academic field but also sets the stage for practical applications in diverse domains, which constitutes the second key goal of SmartLab, i.e. translating the theoretical advancements to practical solutions to societal and industrial fields, enhancing efficiency and innovation, through AI and ML, without sacrificing safety, within these critical sectors.

The SmartLab team is lead by 3 lab directors: prof. Davide Anguita, prof. Luca Oneto, and prof. Fabio Roli.
It also comprises 1 emeritus professor (prof. Sandro Ridella), 2 Assistant Professors (Dr. Luca Demetrio, Dr. Antonio Emanuele Cinà), and more than 10 people working as PhD students, postdoctoral, research associates and visiting researchers.
